Have you noticed? The lovely ladies behind the blog Frances Suzanne have come up with another great series! After their huge success Flip This Pattern, these weeks are all about their September Showcase. Ten patterns by rising Indie designers get a place in the spotlights and are sewn up by different bloggers.
I picked the Meridian for Kids, a lovely basic cardigan by Imagine Gnats. It’s a fully lined A-line cardi with rounded shapes. The pattern comes in sizes 5 to 14 years (and there is one available in women’s sizes as well!) and has an optional collar.
To do the series justice, I made two of them: one regular and one flipped. The blue one is “regular”, the grey one is flipped. Inspired by Delia, I made it unlined. I used a lovely grey sweater knit, previously seen here, with a soft white back and just hemmed all edges.
The blue one is in stretch velvet, lined with a thin blue and white polkadot knit. Both came from my stash, which has grown “slightly” out of control this last year, so I really, really have to start working my way through… The polkadot knit is very thin and slippery, yet very cute. I used it before on this dress.
Since the solid blue is velvet, I decided to go an extra mile and hand-stitch the sleeve hems. I’m usually the kind of seamstress who takes the fast lane, yet with this fabric topstitching wouldn’t be very pretty. And since the pattern is fully reversible, without any loose ends, I decided to finish it the proper way for this fabric.
On both versions of the cardigan I omitted any closure, to keep it more of a wrap. This works beautifully with the rounded pattern pieces.
I made a size 7. Our six years old is in between sizes according to the chart and I wanted them to last throughout the winter.
A versatile pattern, providing a useful addition to our girl’s fall wardrobe! I think I might have to make one for myself as well…
