Today is my stop on the Top Knot Tour, sewing the Top Knot Dress, Tunic and Romper in sister style! Now, sister style may sound quite simple for someone who sews, but believe me, in our household it’s quite a challenge to create something that suits both girls… Read on for how it worked out, plus a discount and a fabulous giveaway!
Sister Style – the tricky parts
The thing is, the eldest refuses to wear skirts or dresses, whereas the youngest refuses to wear anything but just that. Then, the eldest detests pink and loves blue, whereas the youngest is as girly a girl as they are made, she would prefer to wear pink all day, every day… And last but not least, the eldest is becoming more and more of a string bean, whereas the youngest still has her lovely puppy fat.
How to tackle all these things, while still making this into some coherent sister style? Well, there the Top Knot pattern comes to the rescue. Not only is it a dress pattern, it has a romper version as well!
So the first hurdle was easily taken: the eldest got a romper, short sleeved and with shorts, the youngest got the twirly girly dress version, with the kneelength circle skirt. Other options include long sleeves, long pants, tunic skirt or maxi skirt.
Size matters
For our little one, I made a regular size three, without any adaptations to the size. For the eldest, I blended the width of a size 7 with the length of size 10. The pattern has instructions on how to blend loads of different size combinations, so that didn’t cause too much trouble either.
Mix & Match
I searched all around for fun fabrics that came in both pink and blue prints, but didn’t succeed. Mainly because I’m not such a lover of prints in the first place of course… So, I went back to my all time favourite polka dots. Hot pink for the little miss and aqua for the pre-teen.
To keep it really sister style though, I decided to sneak in some of the blue in the pink and vice versa. So, pockets, facings and the inside of the waistband are all in contrast colours.
Since the pattern is designed with cuffs on both sleeves and pants, I considered doing the colour swap there as well, but I didn’t want to push my luck with the girls and was afraid they’d refuse to wear it then… So, I omitted the cuffs altogether. Also, instead of regular buttons I picked white Kamsnaps from my stash, their clean round look works perfectly with the polkadots and it makes going to the bathroom a bit faster for the wearer!

LOVE this! If I had 2 girls, this is exactly the way I would go about “matching” them. As it is, I try to do it with my boys as much as I can 🙂 Love the polka dots too! Can never have too many dots or stripes! 🙂
